THE ROLE

The Chief Executive will be responsible for the operations of the Montana Service Area. The position provides operational and strategic leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality, cost-effective health care consistent with the Mission, Values, goals and objectives of the Service Area and Providence. The Service Area includes Providence St. Patrick Medical Center in Missoula and Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Polson and coordinates service delivery with Providence Medical Group in Montana. The $500M delivery system serves of primary service area of around 170,000 in Missoula, Lake, and Ravalli Counties and serves as the regional referral center for Western Montana. The Chief Executive partners with other Washington-Montana Executive Council members and System leaders in the facilitation and coordination of the key elements of delivering integrated care. The care network will be organized to provide a continuum of services responsive to individual and community needs. This system will enhance access and the quality of services available to the community of Western Montana.

KEY RESPOSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate strong visionary and decisive leadership in driving identified organizational strategy within an evolving health care environment and changing competitive landscape.

  • Demonstrate strategic, financial, and operational savvy to create greater integration of healthcare delivery by – bringing the requisite experience with integrated delivery models; creating an integrated vision for the service area within the context of Providence goals; demonstrating skills as a consensus builder and facilitator, who is willing to make tough decisions and can define them with a comprehensive, thoughtful, and supported rationale.

  • Establish the platform for future Service Area growth in partnership with Regional and System business line leaders by bringing new ideas on innovative approaches and partnerships to the table, showing good judgment and valuing due diligence in determining the merits of creative ideas and suggestions.

  • Serve as a transformation leader.

  • Develop and foster effective collaboration between departments, programs & services, medical staff, and other affiliated services to ensure an integrated approach to care.

  • Partner with others to deliver the best care at the lowest costs. Work with core leaders, serving as a resource to help reduce costs, enhance revenues, and achieve goals and objectives.

  • Understand the competitive market and manage the ongoing strategic and annual planning process of the System at the Service Area level, including updates of strategic plans.

  • Establish organizational structures and management systems to achieve administrative and clinical integration across the hospitals.

  • Develop with the leadership council of the Service Area, annual objective and performance indicators that are consistent with the strategic direction and strategic metrics for the Washington-Montana Region as well as Providence.

  • Develop networks and relationships with community leaders, employers, health plans and providers as appropriate to improve community health and enhance the continuum of care.

  • Partnering with Providence Government affairs, the Chief Executive will be the Providence face with local, state, and federal elected leaders

  • Work with Shared Services to maximize efficiencies in marketing/communications, finance, human resources, information systems other shared services, and lines of business.

  • Assess the health of the community served and implement programs to continually improve health and wellness. Represent Providence in the Service Area before local and state-wide legislative and regulatory bodies.

  • Oversee the financial and capital management of the Service Area in line with regional and system processes.

  • Manage the Service Area Community Mission Board to ensure that it performs its delegated accountabilities; engage with Board Chair and Board Members.

  • Serve as a member of the Washington-Montana Regional Operations Council; attend various System meetings as directed by the Chief Operating Officer, Washington-Montana.

  • Represent the Service Area at community events and activities as requested.

  • Assure that the mission of Providence is integrated into all programs and services provided by the Service Area.

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and manage diverse and effective teams to achieve results. Ensure that continuous improvement occurs on the team and within the Service Area.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required education/experience for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Healthcare of Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or in a related field.

  • At least six (6) years of significant leadership experience in a health care delivery organization with multiple sites of care delivery and significant revenue

  • Personal values compatible with those of Providence and Comfortability in administering a Catholic-sponsored organization.

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the trends and changes taking place in health care and their implications.

  • Working knowledge of managed care including capitation and contracting issues.

  • Traits of a problem-solver who involves others in key decisions but assures timely decisions are made.

  • Ability to educate others about the process of change and the necessity of change.

  • Ability to establish relationships with diverse groups, strong communication, and good listening skills.

  • Understanding of integration between local care networks and of a large, multi-site health system.

  • Ability to focus and energize a group (team, organization) in pursuit of present and future goals inspired by the mission and values of Providence, and considering System, Regional and local needs.
